In 1959, Fred Fish returned home after serving in the U.S. Army Reserves. He bought a used pickup truck, rented a small garage workshop from a neighbor, and convinced his wife Shirley to be his bookkeeper. He started building custom cabinets for friends and neighbors and word spread around town that he did nice work. Collinsville Custom Kitchens was born!
For the first 5 years, the company built custom cabinets. Soon customers started asking for countertops. Mr. Fish needed more space to store the countertop slabs, so he struck another deal to rent space from a different neighbor. He now had a warehouse in addition to a workshop and countertops were added to the product line.
As the company continued to grow in the 60’s and 70’s, it made two more moves into increasingly larger buildings. Eventually custom made cabinets were discontinued and the focus of the company shifted solely to custom made countertops. In 1970, the company employed five people. The company incorporated in 1977 and soon became one of the largest countertop suppliers in the Southern Illinois region.
By the mid 80’s the staff had grown to 12. C.C.K. served the countertop needs of lumber yards, home centers and cabinet dealers all over Southern Illinois and had earned a solid reputation for quality workmanship and excellent customer service.
1991 saw yet another move into a brand new building in Maryville, IL that was specifically designed to house a countertop fabrication shop. Countertops remained the focus of the company, but additional space allowed the company to begin bidding on larger commercial projects. By the mid 1990’s revenues surpassed $1 million annually.
Continued growth brought new challenges and the company continued to meet those challenges. In the early 90’s, customers began to require more information about the progress of their orders. In response, C.C.K. created a computerized tracking system that allowed the office staff to give up to the minute information about the progress of a customer’s order.
On May 1, 2014 the company changed ownership. Longtime employee Karl Altenberger and his wife Emilie purchased all business assets from Fred Fish and renamed the company CCK Countertops LLC. The new owners remain committed to providing customers with the best service, the best products, and superior workmanship. The company will continue to offer a variety of innovative solutions for kitchen countertops, laminated casework, commercial fixture projects, and much more.
Karl and Emilie look forward to supplying your countertops for decades to come!
